English Classes

We offer beginning and intermediate English Language classes taught by local high school teachers and college professors.  The classes will be on a wide variety of topics, from grammar and reading to listening and pronunciation.  These classes are for adults age 16 and older.

The first day of class is for registration and placement testing.  Classes are offered three times a year (Hartford Public Library) at three different times (New York Public Library).  Classes are held in the Spring, Summer, and Fall during the day, evening, and weekend.  This allows us to reach more people in need.

Daytime Classes meet every Tuesday and Thursday at 9 a.m. - 11 a.m.
Evening Classes meet every Tuesday and Thursday at 7 p.m. - 9 p.m.
Weekend Class meets every Saturday at 9 a.m. - 1 p.m.

The classes will meet in the Conference Rooms. The beginning and intermediate class will be held at all of the meeting times, but they will be taught in different rooms.

We also offer free tutoring outside of classes if you need more help.  These volunteers are in the library every Tuesday and Thursday between 6 p.m. - 8 p.m. and every Saturday between 11 a.m. - 2 p.m.  If you are in need of assistance please visit the tutors.

Because of limited classroom space, please contact the library's main office to be put on the class list.

To volunteer as a tutor or teacher with the program please contact the library's main office for more information.

If the class is filled you will be directed toward the English language collection.  It holds DVDs, CDs, books, and more about learning the English language on your own (Hartford Public Library). You are still able to utilize the tutors.

Conversation Partners/Groups

 (CURE, 2012)

Conversation Partners is a great tool for teenagers and adults.  This program lets a native English speaker be partnered with an ESL learner to help them learn the language.  This is great for the people that want to learn another language.  By helping an ESL learner you get to know more about their language, culture, and themselves.  This is a great tool in conjunction with English classes.

For teenagers, we partner with the local high schools' language departments to get volunteer.  These partners are required to meet once a week, but are encouraged to meet more often if interested.  The reasoning behind these partners is for the ESL learner to get to know the community and everyone in it.  Some of the partners have seen movies, gotten coffee, gone to high school sports games, and more.  Once a month the partners will meet in the library to talk with other partners.  We try to partner the teenagers with someone from their school and/or community.  Interested students will fill out an application so that they can be matched to an ESL learner.

For adults, we have applications available to the community so that they can partner with an ESL learner.  This opportunity grants the adult someone that wants to learn their language and wants to help them learn English.  The partners are required to meet once a week, but are encouraged to meet more often.  Some of the partners have gotten coffee, seen movies, gone out to eat, just hang out, and more.

Conversation Groups are for people that want to talk in a group setting.  They meet once a week, usually on a Saturday morning.  The group conversations gives you the opportunity to talk in a group setting about things going on in the community.  It is open to the public.

If you are interested in any of these programs please contact the library main office for more information.  These programs are free.
